This seven minute long, silent, still-image slide work was made by Tracy as a visual contribution to Traversing the Field: An Interdisciplinary Symposium on Walking and Thinking in Scottish Landscapes. The different uses to which walking are put and the different meanings derived therein, with particular focus on Scottish contexts, were explored. Acting as a counterpoint to the symposium’s verbal presentations, the work was presented without the requirement of narration, or the physical presence of an orator.
Images (drawings, photographs) and texts (drawn, spoken) are combined in a carefully choreographed slide projection.
Conditions of identity are investigated through artistic research processes undertaken by Tracy & Edwin within the Scottish Highlands and the Apennine mountains of the Molise region, Italy.
The affective and multi-sensory aspects of walking are revealed in relation to their ability to stimulate on-site experimentation in textual and image-based language processes that lead to compositions that are an artistic artefact. Societal issues such as assimilation, national identity and gender are communicated with reference to e.g. Yve Lomax, W.G. Sebald, Kathleen Jamie, Iain Crichton Smith, Gaelic language and Italian dialect.
